Zhang Yifan is a cinematographer based in Naarm (Melbourne), Australia.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film and Television from the Victorian College of the Arts at the University of Melbourne in 2022, receiving High Distinction. Shortly after graduating, he began working in the camera department on productions including the ABC series White Fever Season 1, Spooky Files Season 2, the Stan original series Gnomes Season 1, Dear Life Season 1 and feature film My Eyes.
Beyond his camera assistant credits, Yifan has shot several award-winning short films as a cinematographer. We, the Children of Caterpillars (dir. James Haggarty) screened at St Kilda Film Festival 2023. Influence (dir. Nick Vidler) was showcased at Fantastic Film Festival Australia and won Best Student Film at Melbourne Cineverse. His recent work Housekeepers (dir. Kaede Miyamura) premiered at Flickerfest 2025, won Best National Short at the Multicultural Film Festival Victoria, and received an AWGIE nomination while contending for Best Short Film at the 2025 AACTA Awards.
Drawing from his Chinese upbringing and deep interest in Chinese aesthetics as well as his experience within the Australian film industry, Yifan strives to create images that are emotionally delicate and precise, while technically striking. He is particularly drawn to stories that demand a distinctive visual language and enjoys collaborating with filmmakers who seek to push beyond the conventional storytelling and the anglocentric lens.
